What is the Oil Gauge For?

Types of Aquarium Filters

An aquarium’s filtration system is easily its most complex and essential component. To understand why, we must first understand that fish tank aquariums are not mere containers that hold water, fish, and ornaments. Instead they are their own little marine ecosystem, made up of complex interactions between chemicals and living beings. The filter is an especially important part of this ecosystem because it protects the habitability of the water by removing any harmful or unwanted debris and maintaining the chemical balance. The main purpose of the filter is to regulate the amount of ammonia in the water. This ammonia is produced by the respiration and excretions of the fish, along with any decomposing organic matter. Getting rid of this ammonia is simply a matter of allowing nitrogen fixing bacteria to break it down into nitrates. The bacteria requires a large amount of surface area on which to grow on, and this is what the filter provides – they are often composed of a porous sponge upon whose large surface area the bacteria is allowed to thrive. Aside from this biological component, filters also serve a mechanical and chemical role. They remove any particulate matter, such as bits of uneaten fish food, waste matter, and aquatic plant debris. Chemical filtration removes any unwanted compounds and waste material that has dissolved into the water by employing either activated carbon or foam fractionation.

There are several types and configurations of aquarium filters, each designed to suit the specific needs of different set ups.  External filters are located outside of the aquarium itself, with the tank water being continuously pumped through a series of different filter media and returned back into the aquarium. This type of setup is ideal for aquarists who do not wish to have a filter system taking up space inside the tank itself. Because they are not designed to be as compact or inconspicuous, external filters are generally easier to maintain, and much more effective than most internal filter systems.

Internal filters are located within the confines of their fishtank aquariums, whose biological filtration component is usually made up of a chemically inert sponge with a large surface area to play host to nitrogen fixing bacteria. These filters can either be passive or active, with active internal filters having electric pumps that continuously pump water through the sponge. Other variations of the internal system include airlift filters, which uses an air pump to create bubbles and water flow, corner filters, and simple sponge filters. Because of the difficulty involved with maintaining them, internal Filter systems are generally better suited for smaller tanks.

Some filtration systems make active use of the environment within the tank in order to facilitate biological filtration. Under gravel filters rely on the gravel substrate on the bottom of the aquarium to provide the surface for the necessary bacteria to grow on. A porous plate is placed underneath the substrate, through which an external air pump or internal water pump provides suction. The water passes through the gravel, which filters out any debris. The bacteria growing on the gravel then converts the ammonia into nitrates. This system however requires that the gravel be distributed evenly on the bottom for it to work. A passive variation of this system is called a deep sand bed. In this case, a bed of 4 to 6 inches of fine sand resides at the bottom of the aquarium. The sand becomes host to anaerobic bacteria that breaks down ammonia. This method, however, can only be used in salt water aquariums.
